Mario,
The Amithlon is not a complete emulation of the Amiga, including
hardware, which is why it runs so quickly and only supports a limited
range of software. UAE is a much more complete Amiga environment and
it runs much more slowly even with the JIT (Just In Time)
interpreter. Also, the Amithlon will only support OS3.9, at least for
the present, and I suspect it will always be several OSs behind the
A1 version. It would be in Amiga Inc.'s interests.
The PPC processor speed is not the only indication of processing
power. The number of processing steps per clock cycle and the
efficiency of the instruction set and pipeline caching is also
important. However, it may start slower than Amithlon in the
emulation stakes, but the OS will progressively be rewritten to run
in native PPC or fast DE mode. Many applications, including existing
PPC programs on other platforms, may well be ported to PPC/DE. Thus,
the real life performance could exceed Athlon and Pentium IV chips of
far higher nominal processor speed. We will have to wait, to find
out.
